For as long as I can remember, I have been a devoted listener to sports talk radio when driving. While I find it entertaining, it rarely proves to be educational. In an effort to make more use of my time in the car, I have started downloading and listening to a handful of podcasts. Here are a handful of the best ones (all downloadable through Itunes) that I think players and families could benefit from.
1) Pure Sweat Basketball Show – this is a short daily podcast hosted by performance coach Alan Stein and trainer Drew Hanlen. Every day they interview someone different in the world of basketball (coaches, strength coaches, general managers) and get their stories and insights into the world of basketball. Great stuff!
2) Increase Your Impact with Justin Su’a – Justin Sua puts out a very short (5 minutes of so) daily podcast with quick thoughts on how to make the most of your day. His message is always very positive and practical and is a great way to start your day productively. I think this would be a great listen for anyone, regardless of age.
3) Hardwood Hustle – this is a bi-weekly podcast hosted by leadership coach Alan Bradley and TJ Rosene, the men’s coach at Emmanuel College. They tackle different topics every week (i.e., Why are some players so hard to coach, Why are some coaches so hard to play for, The role of religion on sports) and debate them in an entertaining and informative way.
4) Growing Leaders Podcast with Tim Elmore – this podcast should be required listening for parents and their children. Tim Elmore, the author of multiple books on the subject of leadership and parenting, interviews individuals from various field about what we can do to create leaders in the next generation of children. His message of accountability and responsibility is refreshing in an era where many are entitled and coddled.
5) The Secret to Success with CJ & Eric Thomas – This is a Friday podcast with Eric Thomas and two co-hosts. It is a running conversation about different topics related to personal development and success. The themes of the show are hard work and individual responsibility. Eric’s story of going from being homeless to being one of the most sought after motivational speakers in the world is inspirational and his message is spot on.
Those are my top 5 but here are a couple others that are worth a listen as well. Enjoy!
-The Vertical Podcast with Woj – great insight into the NBA with Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski
-The Winning Youth Coaching Podcast
-Whistle and a Clipboard – bi-weekly coaching interview and thoughts
